The Ruby 2 faithfully reproduces the shop VT-5 vacuum tube EQ built by D.W. To be afraid D.W. Fear the VT-5 in your DAW Ruby is loyal to D.W. Fearn’s highly coveted VT-5 vacuum tube EQ, officially certified by Fearn himself. The original hardware equalizer uses a passive LC circuit with Class A triode vacuum tube stages for input and output. The input transformer is made by Jensen and the power stage uses the same custom Jensen transformer used in the VT-1/VT-2 microphone preamps. The preamplifier stage dynamically recreates the timbre of the original hardware unit, including hardware harmonic distortion behavior, inherent phase shift and frequency response deviations. With the preamp off, the plug-in offers a cleaner, more linear audio signal than the original version. The gain-grade plugin behaves just like kicking the original unit at different input levels, which is why Ruby has an “input size” control. It provides a single-knob internal gain control via hidden connected input and output gain stages.
